O Level Marking System, O Level Grading system Singapore

How does the O Level Marking system work?

THE Ministry of Education (MOE) has an appeals system for the O-level examination results. Anyone who believes that there has been a mistake in his grades can make an appeal, for a sum.

On the release of results on Jan 15, my brother appealed. Till now, he has yet to receive an answer. Meanwhile, junior colleges all across the country have completed their first term.

None of the heads of departments in schools, nor most principals and vice-principals I have queried, has any idea how this 'checking' process works.

Even when MOE finally returns with a verdict, it reveals only whether the results are 'accurate' or 'not accurate'. Nothing on how it was done.

How does the O-level exam script marking system work? Who monitors the markers? How is standardisation done? Who makes sure that, even though markers are different, standards are the same and grades are fair?

I hope MOE will clarify.

"It is the mindset of failed students to blame the markers" I disagree. Students would definitely want to know what went wrong if he/she has done very well consistently in school but suddenly got a poor grade for the O level exams. I knew of cases where after the appeal, the grades were adjusted because of error in marking or adding, although this is exceptionally rare. Even if there is no error, the student should be allowed to view the script to find out what went wrong and to be convinced that there is no error.
